Every Student Succeeds Act:
50 State Roll Call
The bipartisan Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law in December 2015, replacing No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The passage of ESSA turned control of the country’s K-12 education system back over to the states, giving local legislatures more flexibility surrounding decisions about standards, assessments and other accountability measures. Since Congress passed ESSA, states have been busy writing their own accountability plans which have to be submitted for approval from the federal Department of Education no later than September 2017.
This map provides updates on where states are in that process, and also shares relevant news coverage on how states have constructed their plans and engaged parents, educators and stakeholders in the drafting process. Bookmark this page to see regular updates; you can also get up to speed with The 74’s video explainer of 5 things you should know about ESSA and follow developing news from the states via The 74's ESSA series.
The Collaborative for Student Success is also conducting its own independent peer review of the different state plans. The 74 will share their recommendations, best practices, and ideas on how states can strengthen and improve their plans.
